Southeast Texas offers rich, diverse opportunities to enjoy life to the fullest. It readily embraces individuals of all ages. Historically strong in community service and diligent work ethics, Southeast Texans love to play and celebrate each day throughout their life span. Good health in later years offers older adults vibrant options to enjoy festivals, sports, natural habitats, waterways, hobbies and good friends 365 days a year in Southeast Texas.

Through this Healthy Aging initiative, the Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Texas strongly promotes good nutrition, pre-planning activities and community involvement and activity. We hope that this information enhances your journey to a healthy aging lifestyle.

  • Sound nutrition and great companionship is offered to older adults at area Congregate meal sites. Reminiscent of family style served meals, new friends and old meet daily at one of more than 20 nutrition sites in Hardin, Jefferson and Orange counties. Please call 24 – hours in advance to reserve your spot! For the chefs who enjoy meal preparation at home, we offer several delicious healthy recipes.
  • Pre-planning activities focus on aggressively maintaining the best possible health and peace of mind in later years. Physical health options are offered through local health clubs, YMCA’s, wellness centers, etc. A no cost option to great exercise programs may be located within your local senior centers. For more information, please contact the Area Agency on Aging. Before starting any exercise program, it is suggested that you discuss this with your physician. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services offers the TEXERCISE program. Texercise is a statewide educational campaign, that promotes general awareness of the powerful, lasting benefits of regular physical activity coupled with proper nutrition. It is a multigenerational program focused upon on bringing families and neighborhoods together to add fun and mutual support to the process of positive lifestyle change. Preplanning also focuses on managing your personal medical, financial and legal information in preparation for a time in which you might need assistance.   • Life in Southeast Texas follows the creed "laissez les bon temps roulez" – let the good times roll! Local newspapers regularly print a calendar of upcoming events designed to find to interest everyone. Local health screening and health fairs are advertised in print as well.
